On January 21st 2009, coinciding with January 20th in the United States of America, over 40 musicians, poets, storytellers and dancers gathered in Wellington, Aotearoa/New Zealand to celebrate the inauguration of President Barack Hussein Obama, the first African American to be elected president of the United States of America.
In Aotearoa/New Zealand, as in just about every corner of the world, people wanted to come together to celebrate this history-changing day. There was a perception, certainly a hope, that the politics of humankind had reached a new level, one not draped in the colours of duplicity and treachery, and that the significance of this event was not just for the United States of America but for the world.
