DoP 2009 NZ
Harley Jenkins was born in the Darfield hospital in the spring of 1930 and has remained in the area ever since. After leaving school in 1944 he worked on his father's farm at Kimberley and, on a casual basis, for other farmers in the district. His foray into farming on his own account came in 1954 with the purchase of three pedigree Angus heifers. A year later he was to purchase "Floridale" only a kilometre or so from where he was raised as a child and from those extremely modest beginnings so began a lifetime of dedication to the fickle business of running a commercial Angus cattle stud.

Harley's expertise with livestock has seen him make a considerable mark within the stud Angus world. Aside from his ability as an astute judge of cattle he has been blessed with a quick wit and a lively sense of humour. This story notonly tells of his farming achievements but also dwells on the lighter moments of life and some of the ... more

Biotech Time-Bomb order quantity

NZ$ 25.00 each
Author: Eastham Scott
Customer Order Reference:
Decisions we make today on genetic engineering may well have irreversible repercussions for the future of all life on Earth.

The effects of GE have the potential to be cumulatively catastrophic, and to affect all future generations.

Once the genetic genie is out of the bottle (or the lab), there’s no putting it back. Yet it is difficult for ordinary people to evaluate or even take seriously because its effects are, at present, by and large invisible without a microscope. If you explode an atomic bomb over a city like Hiroshima, the immediate catastrophe gives way slowly to residual radiation effects on future generations. Although drastic and terrible, these are gradually lessened with the passage of time. But the release of genetically modified organisms will follow exactly the reverse trajectory.

Genetic engineering is a biological time-bomb, and the fuse is already ticking

Home of more than 40 million sheep (over 10 per person), New Zealand is a major global exporter of sheep products: annual wool exports alone are worth well over $800m. Added to that, there is a rapidly growing interest from small businesses and lifestylers in specialist breeds and yarns. Sheep are also a major drawcard for overseas visitors. All of which popular demand adds up to good reason for publishing a Pocket Guide to Sheep Breeds of New Zealand, along with its companion volume, the Pocket Guide to Cattle Breeds of New Zealand. Originally published in large format several years ago by Reed, both books have been brought thoroughly up to date, with new pictures throughout and extended and updated text.

The Blood, the Soil, the Gold: And the World's First One Billion Dollar Thoroughbred order quantity
  +   -
NZ$ 70.00 each
Paperback
Author: Tim Gard & Simon Ortlepp (ill.)
Customer Order Reference:
The thoroughbred is more than just a racehorse; he is a global phenomenon that has been refined over the ages - a masterpiece of natural engineering in today's world. As explained within, a single member of his breed could today be valued at one billion dollars. This is a story of passion and perseverance, involving man's long and intimate association with the thoroughbred. The breed's history unwinds from the time of the Romans in England two millennia ago through battles, the crusades, migrations and the development by royal lineages to the 17th century where the direct taproots of today's thoroughbred come into effect. You will learn how the thoroughbred has evolved, through the relationship of time and geography, into the universal commodity he is today. In tracing the foundation sires, the influence of the great classic races, national variations in breed and with informed conjecture on the future of the thoroughbred, this unique ... more

Wild Green Yonder : Ten years volunteering on New Zealand's organic farms order quantity

NZ$ 30.00 each
Paperback
Author: Philippa Jamieson
Customer Order Reference:
Itching for a change, city girl Philippa Jamieson quits her cosy job in Dunedin to travel around New Zealand on the WWOOF scheme (Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms). Over the course of two-and-a-half years she volunteers at 40 locations – market gardens, livestock farms, communes – many of which truly lie in the wild and hairy yonder. Along the way Philippa meets a bevy of diverse characters: the irrepressible farm host who’s built his own coffin – with a limerick for an epitaph; Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons; and many more, not forgetting Thelma the goat. Some of our unsung heroes can be found in these pages: forward-thinking Kiwis who are quietly working away at producing healthy food without toxins, saving heirloom crop varieties, practising self-sufficiency and improving the soil for the next generation. Informative, entertaining and affectionate, The Wild Green Yonder offers inspiration to anyone with a yen for ... more
